Cibo e cultura (e ClipArt di Office)

C’è un bell’intervento in Taccuino di traduzione 2.0 sui riferimenti al cibo nelle espressioni idiomatiche e su come lo stesso alimento possa avere valenze completamente diverse in lingue, e quindi culture, diverse.
Mi ha fatto tornare in mente un esempio che aveva avuto un certo effetto su di me ai tempi dell’università: mi aveva convinta che la teoria della traduzione era una materia affascinante e che sarebbe stato interessante approfondire gli aspetti culturali della traduzione. Ho recuperato il libro e il passaggio:
| When translating butter into Italian there is a straightforward word-for-word substitution: butter—burro. Both butter and burro describe the product made from milk and marketed as a creamy-coloured slab of edible grease for human consumption. And yet within their separate cultural contexts butter and burro cannot be considered as signifying the same. In Italy, burro, normally light coloured an unsalted, is used primarily for cooking, and carries no associations of high status, whilst in Britain butter, most often bright yellow and salted, is used for spreading on bread and less frequently in cooking. Because of the high status of butter, the phrase bread and butter* is the accepted usage even where the product used is actually margarine. So there is a distinction both between the objects signified by butter and burro and between the function and value of those objects in their cultural context. A questo proposito ho dato un’occhiata alle immagini proposte nella ClipArt di Office per burro ed effettivamente le opzioni disponibili privilegiano le caratteristiche "angolosassoni" (colore giallo intenso e, spesso, presenza di fette di pane tostato), in altri casi l’aspetto è più familiare ma non il contenitore.
Può essere utile sapere che le parole chiave associate a ciascuna immagine ClipArt sono personalizzabili: basta fare clic con il pulsante destro del mouse sull’immagine all’interno del riquadro ClipArt, scegliere Anteprima/Proprietà e modificare a 
piacimento, ad esempio aggiungendo sapone da bucato all’immagine qui a destra o associando una propria parola chiave alle immagini preferite per poterle poi ritrovare facilmente.
